Behavioral disorders in children is a common problem. Parents experience their children acting out at
home, even at school. A behavioral disorder is when a child displays different behaviors outside of
normal behavior. According to Boston's Children’s Hospital, symptoms of behavioral disorders
include: Easily getting annoyed or nervous, often appearing angry, putting blame on others, refusing
to follow rules or questioning authority, arguing and throwing temper tantrums, or having difficulty
in handling frustration. (PsychGuides, 2018)

Although behavioral disorders/issues can be an issue in both genders; boys are more likely to “suffer
from behavioral disorders” (Victoria, 2017). Behavior problems can result from any stress in a
child’s life. According to National Association of Social Workers, children in impoverished families
often exhibit behavior problems (NASW, 2003). Other children exhibit behavior issues because of
genetics, environment, or just for help.

There are three most common behavioral disorders in children. Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD),
conduct disorder (CD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) all have similar
symptoms. Diagnosing one from the other can be hard without the proper routine. Also, a child can
have more than one of these disorders.

Treatment is different for these disorders. With ODD, medication is not normally used. Instead,
parent training, social skills training, and individual therapy are used. In CD, psychotherapy is used
for treatment. This treatment is used for a long period of time. ADHD is one disorder that many treat
with medicine. Sometimes, medicines may be substituted for stimulants. Regardless of what disorder
a child may have, you should always monitor their behavior and check on a child.

  1. I never knew there were more disorders besides ADHD I have seen a large number of children over the years being diagnosed and prescribed medication to help calm their behavior. There are other factors that may cause children to act out such as attention from their parents.

  2. A lot of these behaviors I believe come from environmental stressors. Children did not have to worry about a lot of things that they have to do now and it is stressful. Kids now have to deal with parents who are on drugs and they have to be the parent to siblings. Some children have jobs to help out the family. So it is a lot they have to deal with on top of trying to be just a kid.

  3. children have behavioral problems that needs to be addressed. i also notice that when the doctor or teacher finds out hat a child has a behavioral problem, the first thing they try to do is put that child on medication.Sometimes medication is not even necessary. I agree with Norma, some children act out at school and other places because what he/she have to deal with at home.

  4. I never that boys suffer with these issues more than girls. I wonder why? but this also leads to my concerns about the different challenges kids face within their home and the first thing the doctors want to do is label them and put them on control behavior medicine. now I'm not saying that some these kids don't need it but I just believe that some of them that's on it don't need it. In my opinion.

  5. I have longed questioned why so many African American boys are diagnosed with behavioral problems. I wonder how many boys are mis-diagnosed?
