Passionate Post

Kids with behavioral disorders is a topic that I found interesting since 7th grade. I've always had a bond with kids, so I spent most of my middle and high school years volunteering at daycares and babysitting my neighbors' children. It wasn't until I met a 4-year-old, who always acted out during the day. His behavior triggered my curiosity as to why he would act like this.

Yes, I do know that "kids will be kids" but this was different. He cursed, hit adults, ran out of classrooms, and threw tantrums. The staff and volunteers didn't know how to handle him. They would sit him in corners, yell at him, "nap time", or leave him by himself. Because I was a new volunteer, I knew nothing of his medical history. I had to chaperone him one day, and my supervisor finally told me that he suffers from ADHD so I have to be patient while working with him.

I never had a problem chaperoning him. He was well behaved when he was with me. I believe that kids with behavioral disorders are often misunderstood. Most people would often be ready to discipline and yell at children. In reality, all children may need is attention and someone to have fun with.

I believe that there should be more awareness about children with behavior disorders. I know how it feels for someone to misjudge you and not understand you. It's not easy to open up to people and with people looking at you for something that you're not, it can be very discouraging as you move on in life.

  1. Like i stated before, we are both interested in children. I do agree that kids will be kids, however, there is a limit to know when something is wrong. there should be awareness and advocacy for this children. i love how passionate you are about this topic. see you next class.

  3. Yes kids will be kids, but parents should be more aware if their child has behavioral issues because the sooner they get help the better. Also teachers have to learn the signs and have some patience when dealing with children who have behavioral disorders.
